Primordial Whispers

Your eyes blinker slowly open. The humid air is soup in your lungs. Groggily, you realize you are laying on a bed of pine needles. You sit up and find yourself perched perilously near the edge of a cliff face, overlooking a vast, mist-shrouded valley. Fingers of jungle snake up the slopes of the mountains as if reaching for you, trying to snatch you into its primeval embrace.

Far below you can see the broad, leathery wings of pterodactyls soaring over the canopy, while some of the tree-trunks reveal themselves to in fact be the long necks of brontosaurs. All about you can hear the eldritch roars and cries of prehistory, of animals that lived and perished countless millions of years before you were born. Nothing like the movies or documentaries you watched as a child- no, one eerie bellow sounding through the smoke, one mere glimpse of such titanic beasts is proof of how pitiful man’s imagination is against the terrible genius of Nature.

A knot of fear coils round and round in your stomach as you come to the dread realization that this impossibly ancient forest is your home forever now, that there is no way back to your comfortable, 21st century life…

Short stories with an explicitly prehistoric theme.

While many of these stories are inspired by real paleontological findings, since I am a fiction writer, I do sometimes embellish or even ignore certain facts as suits a story’s needs. While it is nice to hew to scientific accuracy as much as possible, the story always comes first. Artistic license is thus in full effect.

This page will be continually updated as new stories are written.
